Everyone said skittles should be the first thing we tried, and I was a little dubious. I don’t even like skittles that much? But hey, I’m suggestible. So we got some skittles and popped them in!
Freeze drying skittles is honestly pretty easy. The Harvest Right Pro has a candy mode, and their app gives you all the settings. If you have the WiFi adapter ($69 to buy, worth every penny for me!) then you can just pull up the recipe on the app and hit a button, and it preps your freeze dryer for you.
Skittles don’t have much moisture and they go pretty fast. It takes about 2.5 hours for one batch, and they split open which makes them look super cool.
But the most surprising part for me was that apparently I just didn’t like the texture of skittles. I’m not super into chewy candy. But these were not chewy anymore! They’re crunchy and when you bite into them they explode into this ultra flavorful powder. They are hard to stop eating. Trust me!
Also, once you’ve started doing this, everyone in your life wants them. Especially because 5.5 ounces of freeze dried skittles retails for $5.99 and we bought a 54 ounce container of skittles at Sam’s Club for $11 and turned them into a truly ridiculous amount of freeze dried skittles.
Apparently some people get these machines and pay them off just by selling freeze dried candy at various markets. If I were a market person, I would probably do that. Selling food online is a lot more complicated, so I am just going to stick to sending them to our friends!
